Abstract
The presence of the “old poet of the City”, C. P. Cavafy, in Lawrence Durrell’s The Alexandria Quartet, is not the presence of a conventional character of the book, but rather an inscription
(and a very significant one), on those that compose the palimpsest-novel of the Irish writer.
This inscription consists of direct and indirect quotations and other references to Cavafy, and is related with the “second degree literature”, which, according to Genette, «is written by reading”. Other properties are related to narrative processes. For eg. the Aristotelian peripeteia: reversal of an already formed narrative situation. Or the Gideian mise en abyme: representation of the plot in “miniature” and at a different structural level. Or even the intertextuality: interaction between cavafian ‘hypo – text’ and the whole palimpsest as ‘hyper – text’ (interms of G. Genette).
