Plastically rendered terracotta vase, shaped like a life-size right human foot with. The upper surface has a sculpted, detailed rendering of the foot, especially the toes and nails, while the bottom surface has a concave impession of the same body part. The vase curves at ankle level to ensure a better fit. It has a circular mouth where the tarsus would be which widens sligthly upward. Τhe left side we have written in Greek the beginning of the oath of Hippocrates “Ὄμνυμι Ἀπόλλωνα ἰητρὸν, καὶ Ἀσκληπιὸν, καὶ Ὑγείαν, καὶ Πανάκειαν, καὶ θεοὺς πάντας τε καὶ πάσας, ἵστορας ποιεύμενος”/ trd. The hot water bottles were used for relief of pains during menstruation, or for the heart or spleen . Similar constructions from the Athens Agora were used for both transporting and drinking liquids.
In other areas (Delos, Chios, Pylos, Aetolia, Macedonia), as well as in Paphos, that terracotta vases, which had a therapeutic use were manufactured from the 3rd c. BC. Its is assumed that those vases were ordered by physicians, druggists, or athletes – and did not belong to the common types of Hellenistic vases.
The heating pad is fully functional. You can use it for therapeutic reasons (keep much longer temperature). This, however, Art work painted for decorative use. The heat, perhaps, affect the quality of colors
